Peppermint Bristlenose

The Peppermint Bristlenose is a striking freshwater catfish recognised for its dark body covered with contrasting white spots and distinctive bristles that develop around the head, particularly in mature males. Its attractive pattern, peaceful temperament, and manageable adult size make it a highly sought-after addition to tropical community and planted aquariums.

Like other Bristlenose Catfish, Peppermints spend much of their time grazing across driftwood, rocks, glass, and aquarium decorations. While they can assist with algae control, they require a complete and varied diet and should not be expected to survive on algae alone.

Feeding

Provide a varied diet consisting of quality algae wafers, sinking catfish pellets, spirulina-based foods, and fresh or blanched vegetables such as zucchini and green beans. Occasional protein-rich foods can also be offered as part of a balanced diet.

Feed after the aquarium lights begin to dim if necessary, as Peppermint Bristlenose can be more active during the evening and overnight.

Aquarium Care

Provide plenty of hiding areas using caves, rocks, plants, and driftwood. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as Bristlenose Catfish can produce a significant amount of waste.

Driftwood is a valuable addition to a Bristlenose aquarium, providing natural grazing surfaces, shelter, and environmental enrichment. Avoid housing them with highly aggressive fish that may prevent them from feeding or occupying suitable hiding areas.
