Check valves are particularly useful when an air pump is positioned below the aquarium's water level. Installed correctly in the airline, the one-way valve allows air to travel towards the aquarium while helping prevent water from siphoning back towards the pump during a power outage or when the air pump is switched off.

Installation

Install the check valve inline between the air pump and the aquarium.

For correct installation:

• Disconnect the air pump before working on the airline
• Cut the airline tubing at a suitable location
• Connect each end of the tubing securely to the check valve
• Ensure the valve is installed in the correct airflow direction
• Reconnect the air pump
• Confirm that air is flowing correctly through the system

Many check valves include an arrow or other marking showing the direction of airflow. This should point towards the aquarium.

Aquarium Air Pump Safety

A check valve provides additional protection against back-siphoning, but good air-pump installation practices should still be followed.

Where possible:

• Position the air pump above the aquarium water level
• Use a check valve when the pump is positioned below water level
• Keep electrical connections dry
• Create drip loops in electrical cables
• Inspect airline tubing regularly for cracks or deterioration
• Check that connections remain secure
• Replace damaged or blocked valves when required

Care & Maintenance

Periodically inspect the check valve to ensure air continues to flow freely in the correct direction.

If airflow becomes significantly reduced, check the airline, valve, air stone and other connected equipment for blockages or deterioration.
