Pearlscales are gentle, relatively slow swimmers and are best kept with other peaceful fancy goldfish with similar swimming and feeding abilities. As they mature, their rounded body, pearl-like scaling, and crown can become increasingly pronounced.

Feeding

Provide a high-quality diet specifically formulated for fancy goldfish. Quality sinking pellets or gel foods are excellent staple choices and can be supplemented with suitable vegetables and appropriately sized frozen foods.

Feed smaller portions rather than one large meal and avoid overfeeding. Because Pearlscales have extremely compact, rounded bodies, maintaining a balanced diet and sensible feeding routine is particularly important.

A varied and nutritious diet helps support healthy growth, body condition, scale development, colouration, and overall wellbeing.

Aquarium Care

Crown Pearlscales require excellent water quality and effective filtration, as goldfish produce a significant amount of waste. Regular partial water changes and routine aquarium maintenance are essential.

Provide plenty of open swimming space with gentle to moderate water movement. Avoid excessively strong currents, as the Pearlscale's rounded body shape makes it a less powerful swimmer than streamlined goldfish varieties.

Avoid sharp rocks, rough driftwood, pointed decorations, and narrow gaps. The distinctive raised scales can be damaged by abrasive surfaces and may not return to their original pearl-like appearance if injured.

Suitable tank mates include other peaceful fancy goldfish such as Ranchu, Orandas, Lionheads, and other slower-moving varieties. Avoid highly competitive or fast-swimming goldfish that may prevent Pearlscales from receiving enough food.

Crown & Pearl Scale Appearance

The characteristic “pearl” appearance is created by raised, dome-shaped scales across the body. Crown varieties also develop distinctive head growth that can become more prominent as the fish matures.
